The Museum Service's Archaeology Collection represents 10,000 years of human history from the first stone tools to the relics of Shropshire's more recent industrial past.
Our Single Finds
One of the collections greatest assets is its wide range of Prehistoric objects, many of which were found and donated by local people. The collection also represent finds from Shropshire's Roman past, Anglo Saxon to Medieval artefacts, and Tudor to modern finds.
Our Archaeology Archives
The Museum Service is also responsible for the curation of the many archaeological archives produced by professional fieldwork in the area. At present the Museum Service holds approximately 50 major archives from sites such as Bridgnorth Friary and the Roman town at Whitchurch.
How the collection is used
Some of the material we collect is made available for school children and museum visitors to handle, to bring history alive. Other artefacts are preserved for future specialist researchers to examine and for museum displays. Many items from the archaeology collection are on display at Ludlow Museum, Much Wenlock Museum, Shrewsbury Museum and Whitchurch Heritage Centre.
