The small town of Much Wenlock is an unlikely place to search for the origins of the modern Olympic Games. Yet here in 1850 Dr. William Penny Brooks founded the Wenlock Olympian Society and the town's annual Olympian Games. Dr. Brooks remained throughout his life a leading member of the National Olympian Association and worked to promote the moral and physical benefits of physical education.
What can I see and do?
As well as the story of the birth of the Wenlock Olympian Games and the Modern Olympic Movement, the museum presents:
· The archaeology of Wenlock Edge
· The social history of the town from Medieval times onwards.
· The natural science of Wenlock Edge and in particular its internationally important geology.
· The flora and fauna of Wenlock Edge
· The story of famous people connected with, and inspired by, Much Wenlock.
The museum has a range of activities for children and is the starting point for the Wenlock Olympian Trail.
When can I come?
The museum has now re-opened following a major restoration and enhancement project.
Where is the museum?
Much Wenlock is situated approximately 13 miles south-west of Shrewsbury and 8 miles north-east of Bridgnorth on the A458. The Museum stands in the heart of the town on High Street opposite the town square.
How much is the admission fee?
Entry to the museum is free.
Donations towards improving the museum and its displays are gratefully received.
