Three different orders of friars, Augustinian, Franciscan and Dominican, began settling in Shrewsbury in 13th Century. They were immediately popular with their fine preaching and the example they set in living simple lives of poverty. By Tudor times they were no longer quite so highly thought of and their buildings were falling into disrepair. Henry VIII ordered their closure in 1540s.
