In November 1472, Parliament granted Edward IV a tax to pay for an army of archers to invade France. The tax was set at 10% the value of all rents and incomes and was effectively directed at property owners. Throughout the country commissions were set up to establish what individuals should pay and then collect it. The commissioners records should have been destroyed, but the inquiry held on Jan 10th 1473 at Cleobury Mortimer somehow has been preserved. It mainly deals with landowners in Stottesdon and the western part of the hundred, although some other places are included.
The document is now held in the Shropshire Archives (2867/1). The original is in Latin; here extracts from the introduction have been translated with the complete list of taxpayers.
