In September 2007 there was survey training for volunteers in preparation for the more formal archaeological studies to come in the project. Volunteers learnt how to use digital theodolites and dumpy levels to map part of Tower Yard.
The whole field has now been surveyed in this manner which has enabled its subtle "humps and bumps" to be more easily analysed for evidence of buildings and other features. The results are inconclusive but do suggest some building platforms.
With further surveying, perhaps using geophysical equipment, we hope to detect remains of a medieval tower last recorded as standing on the site in the 1790s. It is possible that the field may also contain the remnants of other medieval settlement.
