These are the earliest accounts for the manor of Cleobury Mortimer. They date from the start of the reign of King Edward III when the manor was in the hands of Roger de Mortimer, who was also acting as regent for the young king, having engineered the murder of his father. Later accounts divide the manor into the town (the "burgus") and the area outside the town (the "foreign" and Cleobury Bernes); however at this stage, the manor is treated as whole.
The accounts show that Mortimer was chiefly interested in Cleobury as the base for hunting in the Wyre Forest and also as the home for his stud; his warhorses ("dexters") were kept here.
